The Decline of Genuine Patriotism and the Crisis of National Consciousness

The Decline of Genuine Patriotism and the Crisis of National Consciousness

In the past several decades, it has become increasingly difficult to identify individuals who genuinely and selflessly love this country. Those who loudly proclaim their patriotism—whether on social media, political platforms, or in public demonstrations—often do so in pursuit of hidden agendas. Their actions appear to be orchestrated by external influences rather than guided by an authentic devotion to the nation’s welfare. Among all, only the war heroes who have endured physical sacrifice and disability in defense of the nation can be regarded with unreserved respect and gratitude.

Simultaneously, the intellectual and cultural landscape of the country has stagnated. No field of study, language, or body of knowledge has meaningfully evolved or modernized in recent decades. The root cause of this decline cannot be attributed solely to the lingering effects of colonial mentality; rather, it lies in a deeper moral and intellectual failure—the absence of genuine dedication and sacrifice for the advancement of knowledge. Throughout history, every great discipline and intellectual tradition has flourished because of individuals who devoted their lives to nurturing and preserving it. Knowledge, by its very nature, is sustained through selfless commitment. Today, however, our ancient wisdom and traditional knowledge systems are rapidly disappearing, not because of external oppression, but due to our collective negligence and indifference.

Reversing this decline cannot be achieved through quick or superficial measures. Those who seek public recognition may succeed in creating a spectacle in the media, presenting themselves as reformers or visionaries. Yet, true dedication rarely seeks visibility; genuine service operates silently, away from the spotlight. The individuals who make the deepest sacrifices for the nation or for the preservation of knowledge are often those least acknowledged.

The resolution of this unfortunate national condition cannot be found in political mechanisms. Political parties, by their very nature, are driven by loyalty to their own supporters and ideologies rather than to the collective good. Consequently, any scholar or intellectual who voices dissent is swiftly marginalized and branded as an adversary of the political establishment. In such an environment, intellectual freedom and honest patriotism cannot thrive.

Beyond the inevitable transformations brought by the passage of time, the nation’s social consciousness has reached a state where even the most devoted patriots find themselves powerless. The erosion of integrity, the commodification of knowledge, and the decline of moral responsibility have together created a crisis of national spirit—a condition that demands not political reform, but moral and intellectual rebirth.
